Boomu Women’s Group is a women’s group located 13 miles from Masindi on the edge of the Murchison Falls National Park; Uganda’s largest national park. Boomu means together and this describes the purpose of the group: to work together for our mutual benefit and the benefit of our communities. The group is a member of the Ugandan Community Tourism Association (UCOTA).
The group has a community tourism project offering bandas, camping, showers and toilets. They are located on the road to Murchison Falls National Park, just a few hundred yards ahead of the park entrance, 8 kilometers from the Kaniyo Pabidi chimpanzee eco-tourist viewing site. The many trees, shrubs, flowers, birds and butterflies they have gives their site a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. The site enjoys the best of worlds, seclusion and accessibility.
They have a craft shop with a variety of crafts. They would be delighted to show you how their crafts are made and teach you how to make your own basket. They also offer food and drinks which combined with their facilities making them an ideal place for stopovers, day trips from Masindi and picnics.
Activities
They make a variety of handcrafts including rattles and woven fabrics but their main activity is basket weaving.They make a wide variety of baskets using banana fibre, sorghum straw, papyrus and raffia. They sell honey made from their beekeeping activities and also stock crafts from members of the community as well as associated sites.
Boomu Women’s Group Village Walk
Boomu Women´s Group has around 40 members from the villages of Kihaguzi and Kigaragara. These subsistence farmers had little produce left over to sell, so in 1999 the women´s group was formed, with the aim of reducing poverty and malnutrition, and providing an income for the members to be able to pay their children´s school fees. What began as a craft group has evolved into a wonderful community tourism project, with accommodation, a restaurant, unique guided tours and a well-tended garden.
This scenic walk through the village reveals to visitors the features of everyday rural life, as well as explaining the hardships facing the community. Your guide will show you the various crops that are grown in Kigaragara, as well as taking you to visit the village blacksmith. Storytellers share tales about customs and the local way of life, and a visit to the nursery can be arranged on request.
Visitors can also book a separate cooking demonstration or a basket weaving class to learn this complex art.

The grass-thatched bandas have been built in traditional Ugandan style for an authentic community experience. They are surrounded by beautiful tropical gardens filled with butterflies and weaver birds. Guests are welcome to relax in the gardens, visit the local community of Kigaragara and explore the craft shop. Ugandan food prepared by local women is served in the restaurant, and in the warm evenings you can relax by the open air bar under the stars.

Room Description
Boomu has seven twin bandas, one double banda and a building with two triple rooms. All have mosquito nets, electric lights (from a generator) and shared bathroom facilities.
Showers are cold water tanks fitted with a shower head, and are outdoors. Jerry cans of hot water can be provided on request.
Toilets are dry eco toilets.
